Engineering & Technical Deep Dive

Technical Architecture: Mutating the PDF Pages Tree Array

In a PDF document, the sequence in which pages are displayed is dictated by the /Kids array within the document's root Pages dictionary, rather than by the physical order of bytes in the file. When you rearrange pages in Khalasna, our WebAssembly engine parses the document catalog (/Catalog), resolves the indirect object references of each Page node, and reorders the pointers inside the /Kids array to mirror your visual drag-and-drop arrangement. If you delete a page, its indirect object reference is excised from the tree, and orphaned resources are safely pruned. The cross-reference table is then updated with the revised byte offsets and serialized into a compliant PDF stream. Because this requires zero recompression of image streams or rasterization of text, reordering executes in a fraction of a second and preserves 100% of the document's original fidelity.
